Through the Náchod Gate to Fortresses and “Rock Towns” of Kladské pomezí (Kladské Borderland)
The tourist region of Kladské pomezí (Kladské Borderland) is situated in North Eastern Bohemia near the Polish border. An important trade route called Kladska connecting Prague with Klodzko used to lead through here. The region with a chequered past and famous celebrities will enchant you with its diversity – a charming hilly landscape, gentle valleys along the Rivers Úpa and Metuje, majestic table mountains, quaint “rock towns” ……
Battles and Fortresses
The large Josefov Fortress founded by Emperor Joseph II with a part of underground passages open to the public will take you in candlelight to the time of its origin – 18th century. Bloody battles of the Austria-Prussian War of 1866 are commemorated with many well kept memorials, cemeteries and monuments. The Náchod environs are encircled with the Dobrošov fortification system, built in the 1930s as protection of the country against Nazis.
“Rock Towns” and Table Mountains
The most frequently visited places include the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, which are made up of unique sandstone rock structures ranking among the largest continuous rock massifs in Central Europe. The Broumov Walls divided into rock towns, glens, rock towers and mushrooms form an approx. 10 km long ridge. The rock labyrinth at Ostaš Table Mountain (700 m above sea level) near Police n. M. – bizarre sandstone structures, towers, aisles and caves will enchant those that wish to avoid floods of tourists and peacefully enjoy natural beauty, serenity and distant views of the Broumov Walls, Krkonoše or Javoří Mountains, from the edge of the sandstone plateau. A part of the border with Poland is formed by Bor Table Mountain, which together with Hejšovina (Szcelinec Wielki )- a typical table mountain - fall under the treasured National Park of Góry Stolowe in Poland.

Famous celebrities born here – writers depicted the region of Kladské pomezí in their work. Karel and Josef Čapek were born in Malé Svatoňovice, Alois Jirásek in Hronov, Božena Němcová spent her childhood years in Ratibořice near Česká Skalice, Josef Škvorecký comes from Náchod.

History and Architecture
A romantic soul will enjoy visits to the castles of Náchod, Nové Město nad Metují or Ratibořice. A remarkable structure is a magnificent Benedictine Baroque Monastery in Broumov built according to the design of K. I. Dienzenhofer and the monastery in Police nad Metují, founded in 1253.
